National and international regulations apply for the transport of these goods to minimize the risk. These regulations provide a specific framework for the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous goods.
Legislation
Depending on the type of transport, different regulations apply for the transport of dangerous goods. The following international regulations apply in addition to national legislation:
- Roads: The European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR)
- Railways: Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail (RID)
- Waterways: European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterway (ADN)
- Maritime traffic: International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code)
- Air traffic: Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air ICAO-TI
Classes and packing groups
Dangerous substances are segmented into classes and assigned to packing groups depending on the level of risk.
Classes
- Class 1: Explosive substances and articles with explosive substances
- Class 2: Gases
- Class 3: Flammable liquids
- Class 4.1: Flammable solids
- Class 4.2: Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
- Class 4.3: Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
- Class 5.1: Oxidising substances
- Class 5.2: Organic peroxides
- Class 6.1: Toxic substances
- Class 6.2: Infectious substances
- Class 7: Radioactive material
- Class 8: Corrosive substances
- Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and products
Packing groups (=PG)
- PG I: Substances with high danger
- PG II: Substances with medium danger
- PG III: Substances with low danger
Labelling / coding
Packaging approved for dangerous goods must be labelled accordingly. The label indicates that the packaging meets national and international requirements and has passed the required tests.

Packaging for dangerous goods
Packaging used for transporting dangerous goods must have a corresponding approval. In order to obtain this approval, the packaging must pass internal and external testing before it is used.
As a manufacturer of dangerous goods packaging, we must provide proof that the packaging solution has passed the following tests:

- Drop test
- Internal pressure test
